How Can I Prepare for Breastfeeding While I’m Still Pregnant?
I was recently asked by a client, “Is there anything I can do while I’m still pregnant to help get the best possible start to breastfeeding?” If you’re expecting and wondering the same thing, this one’s for you.
The truth is, the first few hours and days after birth can make a big difference in how your milk supply develops. But the good news is that understanding a few simple concepts ahead of time can help you feel more prepared and confident.
Why the First Few Feedings Matter
Early and frequent feedings help your milk supply take root. I like to think of your breasts like soil being prepared for a garden. Those early feeds loosen the soil, prepare it, and create the space for growth.
The more often milk is removed in those first hours and days, the more your body learns, This is where nourishment is needed. That early stimulation sets the foundation for a healthy, responsive milk supply.
The Two Hormones That Guide Milk Production
Two key hormones play a big role in this process: prolactin and oxytocin.
Prolactin is released in response to nipple stimulation. It signals your body to produce milk.
Oxytocin responds to nipple stretching, like with a good latch, skin-to-skin contact, or even your baby’s little hands kneading the breast while they nurse. This hormone helps the milk flow more easily.
The Amazing Feedback Loop Between You and Your Baby
Here’s the really cool part. When your baby nurses, signals travel from the nipple through your nervous system to your brain. Your brain then releases prolactin and oxytocin into your bloodstream, sending them right back to the breast to support milk production and flow.
It’s a beautifully coordinated feedback loop between you and your baby. And those early feedings help set the tone for your supply moving forward.
It’s Not About Perfection—It’s About Connection
Early feeding isn’t about doing everything perfectly. Sometimes feeding doesn’t get off to the start you hoped for, and that’s okay. Support is always available.
Every feeding, every attempt, and every moment of connection helps build the bond between you and your baby while laying the foundation for a strong, resilient milk supply. Every moment counts.
And if you’re currently pregnant, just know—you’re already doing such important work for your breastfeeding journey by learning and preparing now.
